NYG medallists dazzle at Dolphin Swimming League

Top medallists from the swimming event of the last National Youth Games in Asaba as well as other swimmers across 11 schools have begun to jostle for honours at the season five of the Dolphin Swimming League in Lagos.

The fifth edition of the competition, which is supported by the Nigeria Aquatics Federation and Lagos State Swimming Association got underway on Saturday at Grange School, Ikeja, Lagos as swimmers between the ages of 6-16 will vie for medals in the four-leg meet.

Triple gold medallists in Asaba, Aidan Dumuje-Abili of Grange School as well as Chioma Kanu were two of the early starters who shone brightly on the opening day of the league by winning their events and they both described the level of competition as high.

“It’s quite exciting to see everyone cheering for one another. I’ always delighted to represent my school in this and the level of competition here is in the same league as the youth games. It’s still a difficult competition,” Dumuje-Abili said.

“I’ve won a gold in 50m breaststroke and I am looking forward to more as the league progresses,” Kanu also said after completing a routine win.

Coordinator of the league, Oluseyi Oyebode, noted that the enthusiasm shown by the schools continued to motivate the organisers to be creative in their approach every season.

“It’s five years and we are still delighted to have wonderful results and testimonies from the last youth games, the West Africa summit and we have some of our swimmers now representing the aquatic federation at global level,” Oyebode said.

“When we look at swimming, it seems to earn more medals than any other sport. We’re about to take advantage of it, then this is the starting point.”

The next stop for the meet will be a double leg in Lekki before the finale of the season at Grange School in February.
